HOW THE WORLD WORKS

Scientific principle I am investigating maps and coordinates and how they evolved over time.

FUNCTION (How does it work)

Big Question: how does a GPS system pinpoints locations around the world?

Sub-questions: Why do we need to use maps?

Who used the first recorded map?

What does GPS stand of?

Line Inquiry: A GPS system pinpoints locations around the world.

Causation

Big Question: how did the Map evolved from original maps to a GPS over time?

Sub questions:

How does the army use maps?

Does the map make the army’s life easier?

Lines Inquiry: Map have evolved from original maps to a GPS over time.

RESARCH:

Cartography or mapmaking has been essential to human life. Humans have been use map even before cave men time, maps were started as cave painting to ancient maps of Greece and Asia though the world exploration. Maps have evolved to a ancient map to a GPS, people use maps to navigate though the world. People have improve maps to they knowledge and pass it down to there family generation to generation. Any one can use a map when your driving use the Mel ways or just a GPS and est. It is simple and easy here is a example.

Anaximander was the first ancient Greek to draw a map of the known world. People of Greece think that Anaximander was the first mapmaker but there where many more. Anaximander drew the land and the sea into map form. Fifty years later Miletus claimed an improved version of the map having more countries and more Islands.

You know how I said any one can use a map well the Australian army use maps too. They use the map the same way as we do example when they are in a different country, coordinates to drop supplies or a air strike or a mortar strike. But sometimes the army use codenames intend of numbers. They also use coordinates of artillery.

Maps and Coordinates comes under Orienteering. Orienteering started as a sport in Scandinavia in the 19th century then became a military training exercise to navigate there way back to base .It was not until 1919 that the modern version of orienteering was born in Sweden. The sport was created by Ernst Killander then the sport evolved again when 3 Swedish men create a better compass which was faster to use. Orienteering was brought into the United States in 1946 and was also used in the USA's army.

Here is some information how to use Coordinates

The map has vertical lines (top to bottom) and horizontal lines (left to right).

These lines form small squares 1,000 meters on each side called grid squares.

The lines that form grid squares are numbered along the outside edge of the map picture. No two grid squares have the same number.

1.The precision of a point location is shown by the number of digits in the coordinates: the more digits, the more precise the location.

1996-a 1,000 meter grid square.

192961-to the nearest 100 meters.

19269614-to the nearest 10 meters
Look at Figure 1. Your address is grid square 1181. How do you know this? Start from the left and read right until you come to 11, the first half of your address. Then read up to 81, the other half. Your address is somewhere in grid square 1181.
